Mental Health at SXSW | The SXSW Panel Picker
Last March I traveled to Austin, TX where I was lucky enough to attend the South by Southwest conference that prides itself on being the nation’s premier destination for discovery. As a writer, and someone who is always looking for stories to tell, it may not surprise you that I catalogued my visit. Here are a few of my favorite pieces from the week I was there.
During the conference, I was lucky enough to meet Eric Weiner in a networking event for creative professionals. The name may sound familiar, if you’ve listened to much of our show, since he was one of our initial guests. An idea spawned over time from that initial meeting. He and I both decided we were going to push mental health at SXSW in a meet up for professionals similar to the one where we met. We pitched it with the following verbiage.
“She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through.
Then passed right by–
And never knew.”
Masks by Shel Silverstein
This meet up is a safe space for everyone who manages a mental health issue to come and be with like minded folk. Come join us, be yourself, and shed the mask you’re forced to wear in today’s society. As we wear masks we are often left believing that we are alone. Come see for yourself that you’re not.
The idea was picked up on by organizers and is now in the voting stage. In order to be put on the schedule for next year’s show we need you, our listeners, to vote for it’s inclusion. Our believe is that this kind of meet up will be valuable in pushing the mental health dialogue further than ever before. Please note, that in order to vote, you are required to set up a free account with SXSW. I assume this is to limit spam voting for panels, not that I this team would ever do such a thing.
If you have any thoughts or questions on the above, please feel free to reach out. We’d love to hear from you to know how we’re doing and why you think about the meet up. Thanks, and we’ll update with news as it’s available.
